the lost and lonely

little lost
little lonely

sitting
thinking out back
butts all stacked and stubbed
thumbing through John

tired as any monk
of loss and loneliness

  1. The hopeless repetitions sometimes only serve to heighten the loneliness, as you have shown so well in these lines.

  4. I believe we all have these moments and that they end when we get tired of them and reach out. Very realistic portrayal and well done.

  10. 'Tired as any monk' is a universal expression and the image speaks a lot. *Sigh*

  14. This rings of the everyday person, who has been beaten down by life, which has taken its toll. Somehow they feel cheated, left behind. Not asking for much, just a little something. Nice one.

  17. I've always felt there was an inherent sadness about smoking cigarettes; not the sophisticated choice of days gone by, but rather a habit born of boredom, slowly burning one's days until they're finally snuffed out.

  19. Yeah, loss and loneliness will make you tired.
As for smoking a cigarette, writer Willy Kyrklund - who started smoking in his forties - said: at some point in life desire unfulfilled becomes so great a force that it makes perfect sense to acquire a desire you can fulfill.

  23. Sharp, sad and succinct, Ollie.

Always use the metaphor of an ashtray so this played its part for me.
