  1. it's all we need to gain focus.

alongside the river my hands always seem to find a stone, a small piece of driftwood. over and over i work it, somehow feeling more connected.

  4. Sometimes a single touch to something grounded is all we need as a prayer.

"...long cleaned of salt...sand..." has a hint of Buddha nature to it, the letting go of distractions in our lives. Very calming poem!

  6. I have special things I keep close in my pocket or handbag, as well...my lucky buckeye, my glass eye, and a tiger eye marble. I love the notion of them being prayer beads. Lovely.

  9. A prayer bead. You really have to work those with great effort.

There's an old story: a rock was kept at a temple in ancient China and the monks would take turns placing it on a shelf that was too narrow. It fell down and they put it back up. Story goes, one day the stone got tired, and stayed up on the shelf. Eventually it became an honored member of the order.

    "long cleaned of salt...sand
worn smooth daily" - very nice!

  13. I love having something in my fingers too, smooth or rough, doesn't matter much, it's the size that counts.
Something permanent, something familiar, something to create calm.

  16. Lovely thought, it's a beautiful shell. I saw it as a pearl, not thinking at all of a prayer bead yet tending to a spiritual theme.

  21. The contents of our pockets - the regular things - bring us comfort. See with our fingers and not with our eyes.
