requiem for my forest

I don't want to talk about it
it is a hard heavy loss

 - the forest is gone

torn up -  manicured
slopped to drain away the swamp

trails, trees, the little puddle pond
that would freeze for winter skates

today I sit
look out over pools, hot tubs
garage full of beamers
a kid staring back at me
through a black metal fence

  1. This hits close to home, Ollie, as one block away, there is a forest being clearcut to make way for humans - for housing - removing yet more habitat for wildlife. There are too many of us, and we do not live wisely. It is hard to watch the devastation. Hard to exchange trees for concrete, buildings and metal fences. You have spoken this so well.
